Frequently Asked Questions

How long do counseling sessions typically last?

Counseling sessions last for 50-55 minutes. They can last up to 60 minutes for the first intake session.

What happens during the first counseling session?

During the first session we will talk about what brought you into counseling, discuss the counseling process and clarify the goal that will guide the work we do together.

How do I know if I really need counseling?

You will know if you really need counseling when the problem you’re having isn’t getting better and at times gets worse, even with your best attempts to make improvements on your own. You may also notice that you aren’t sleeping as well or maybe you’re sleeping all the time. You may also notice a decrease or increase in appetite. These are all good indicators to let you know that the stress in your life is having a big impact on you and that it’s time to seek professional support to manage your stress.

How often will I need to come to counseling?

In the first month you will come to counseling on a weekly basis. As you start making progress towards your counseling goal we will meet every other week. This usually happens between 1 to 2 months.

How long will I need to come to counseling?

The length of your time in counseling will vary depending on the type of issue you’re dealing with. Most of my clients start feeling significant relief after 12 sessions.

How much do sessions cost?

I charge $150 for our initial assessment and $140 for each additional session.

Are sessions covered by my insurance?

I accept Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you have this insurance, you are responsible for your copay and covering any deductible amounts that may apply.

How do I seek reimbursement from my insurance company?

If you do not have Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield for insurance, your insurance plan may include out of network benefits which means your insurance company may reimburse you for a portion of the amount you paid for your counseling session. Some out of network plans reimburse up to 80% of the amount you pay out of pocket for your session. I can give you a super bill to send to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Do you have evening and weekend appointments available?

Danielle has appointments available 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Monifa has appointments available 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Neither of us have weekend appointments available.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions take place in our office in Upper Marlboro, MD or we can meet via secure live video sessions that are similar to Skype.

Who do you work with?

Danielle works with adults 18 and older and Monifa works with adults and teens, 13 and older.

What if counseling isn't working?

We will be assessing your progress together as we meet. Your progress will be based on the goals you set for counseling. If counseling isn’t working for you, we will make a referral to another therapist or support system that is better suited to meet your needs.
